Vulnerabilities Targeting InfiRay Thermal Cameras May Result in Industrial Process Hacking

The consulting company disclosed the details of the vulnerabilities in an advisory on Tuesday, saying they were a direct consequence of insecure coding practices, insecure configuration and outdated software components within the embedded firmware

SEC Consult also said it found multiple attack vectors that will result in remote code execution (RCE).

For context, InfiRay is a China-based manufacturer of optical components, particularly infrared and thermal imaging solutions. Its products are currently sold in 89 countries and regions around the world.

Because of the broad reach of its products, the discovered flaws could potentially act as an entry point into industrial control systems (ICS) and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) networks.

In terms of critical vulnerabilities affecting the Infiray IRAY-A8Z3 cameras, SEC Consult mentioned five. The first refers to the hardcoded credentials for the camera’s web application.

“As these accounts cannot be deactivated or change their passwords, they are considered to be backdoor accounts.”

Secondly, the company said the cameras’ web server interface contains an endpoint that can execute arbitrary commands by manipulating the “cmd_string” URL parameter, thus enabling user login using one of the aforementioned backdoor accounts.

The third issue refers to a potential buffer overflow attack that could be executed by calling strcpy() without checking the string length first.

Fourthly, the camera reportedly offers a shell through a telnet connection.

“The root user does not require a password per default. Thus, anyone on the local network can execute arbitrary commands as root on the camera.”

Finally, SEC Consult said the cameras have multiple outdated software components containing vulnerabilities that were found using the IoT Inspector (OneKey) firmware analysis platform. 

The security company contacted InfiRay multiple times during its investigation, sending them a draft of the advisory in April 2021, but the vendor never responded to its requests.

Because of this, SEC Consult warned it was unaware whether the vendor had patched the affected systems or not.

Cisco Preps New Optical Switch

In a phone call late this afternoon, the company acknowledged the existence of the product, but declined to give further details. "The [Monterey switch] goes in the core. The new switch goes in the metro. These are different products for different markets. One cannot replace the other. The Monterey product has not been discontinued," said a spokesperson.

Other sources in the optical networking industry were more forthcoming with information about the new device. Light Reading has obtained information about the new device from five sources: two public equipment vendors, a startup switch manufacturer, a venture capital firm, and a market research company. All of them requested anonymity.

They say that the new product is being developed in San Jose by Cisco engineers under the code name “The Manhattan Project” and that its official product name will be the ONS 15232.

It’s a 32-port OC192 switch, Light Reading’s sources say, and they add that Cisco is building the product using commercially available silicon, rather than custom ASICs (application-specific integrated circuits).

One of the sources provided more detailed information, saying that the device will be able to optimize optical capacity by “grooming” traffic onto wavelengths at speeds as low as STS1 (51 Mbit/s). That’s significant because it will allow it to compete against products from Ciena Corp. (Nasdaq: CIEN) and Sycamore Networks Inc. (Nasdaq: SCMR), which support similar traffic grooming capabilities on their switches. Ciena’s current success is attributable in large part to being the first to support such a capability in its core optical switches.

The consensus among analysts is that the market will react favorably to the news of a new optical switch from Cisco, especially given the company's difficulties in shipping the Monterey product.

“About 20% of budgeting should be allotted to the installation of the wall. Larger projects need a construction company to put a drywall up to exacting specifications. Ideally, they should have done work on these projects before.”

Most expensive parts of a video wall system
You’re going to start hearing and reading about “pixel pitch” often if you’re seeking to purchase a video wall, so you should know what this important factor means.

According to manufacturer Planar, “pixel pitch describes the density of the pixels (LED clusters) on an LED display and correlates with resolution. Sometimes referred to as pitch or dot pitch, the pixel pitch is the distance in millimeters from the center of a pixel to the center of the adjacent pixel.”

Essentially, a smaller pixel pitch allows for a closer viewing distance (or how close you can stand to the screen without it looking pixelated).
