“My hope is that it [Bitcoin] creates world peace or helps create world peace,” he said. “It may sound a bit ridiculous but you fix that foundational level and everything above it improves. It is in the long-term but my hope is definitely peace.”
Dorsey added that one of the main reasons he loves cryptocurrency is because of its community—calling it “deeply principled.” He said that the biggest cryptocurrency by market cap has a “weird as hell” community—but that's why he likes it.
The Square CEO helped put on the conference, ostensibly created to educate institutions on how they can embrace Bitcoin and “support the network.”
Musk, for his part, revealed today that more than just one his publicly traded companies owns Bitcoin. “I do own Bitcoin, Tesla owns Bitcoin, SpaceX owns Bitcoin,” he said. Tesla famously purchased $1.5 billion worth of Bitcoin in February, as revealed in SEC filings, but SpaceX has yet to make such a disclosure.
Musk also said he is a fan of decentralized finance and personally owns Bitcoin, Ethereum and Dogecoin, while Wood said that Bitcoin works as a hedge against inflation.
But Dorsey was the most zealous, saying that changing the worlds monetary system could bring peace. And that change comes with Bitcoin.
“The amount of cost and distraction that comes from our monetary system today is real and it takes away attention from the bigger problems,” he added.
Dorsey is a long-time Bitcoin fanatic. His payments company, Square, has bought 8,027 Bitcoins in the past year (today priced at $254 million). And he has said that he doesnt have time for other cryptocurrencies, such as Ethereum or Dogecoin, and would quit all other work to focus on Bitcoin full-time if he ever felt his other ventures no longer needed him.

He also touched on the idea of using Ethereum as a decentralized login service rather than relying on centralized social media platforms that take ownership of their users identities, arguing that social recovery wallets could present a better alternative.
He then went on to discuss using Ethereum for retroactive funding akin to the blockchains upcoming EIP-1559 proposal. “Decentralized decision making is much better at retrospective decisions than at prospective ones,” he argued.
Buterin rounded out his talk by stating that the “Ethereum ecosystem has to expand beyond just making tokens that help with trading tokens.”
He mentioned a16z in reference to the prominence of investment funds in DeFi and said that while profit-generating activities like yield farming are useful, they are only “valuable up to Layer 1 and Layer 2.” Beyond that, Buterin warned, theres a risk that stacking money legos on top of one another “to infinity” could harm Ethereum in the long run. “Once you get to Layer 6, you're actually increasing the financial instability and the risk that this whole thing is going to collapse and potentially get a couple of regulators angry.”

While being skeptical about offering bitcoin investment options to its clients, the American multinational investment bank JPMorgan Chase & Co has admitted that demand for the asset class has increased significantly.
Growing Demand for Bitcoin
In a recent interview with Bloomberg, Mary Callahan Erdoes, JPMorgan‘s director of Asset and Wealth Management, noted that most of the company’s clients view bitcoin as an asset class.
To maintain its client base, Erdoes stated that the giant bank will continue to provide cryptocurrency services to its customers to meet up with the growing demand.
“A lot of our clients say, ‘That’s an asset class, and I want to invest, and our job is to help them put their money where they want to invest,” she said.
Interestingly, earlier in February, the bank‘s co-president and COO, Daniel Pinto, revealed there was no demand for bitcoin at the time. But now JPMorgan’s clients have an unfading appetite for the crypto asset, which the US banking behemoth is consciously trying to satisfy.
Erdoes pointed out, however, that the institution still has its reservations about deciding to categorize cryptocurrencies as an asset class, considering that they are extremely volatile.
“It‘s a very personal thing. We don’t have Bitcoin as an asset class per se and time will tell whether it has a store of value. But the volatility you see in it today just has to play itself out over time.”
JPMorgan's Mixed Feelings on Bitcoin
In the past, JPMorgan never liked cryptocurrencies, especially bitcoin. Earlier in 2017, the company's CEO, Jamie Dimon, blasted bitcoin, calling it a fraud, and even threatened to fire any of his employees dealing with it.
However, he changed his stance sometime later and revealed that he regretted calling the cryptocurrency a fraud, praising blockchain as a revolutionary technology.
The company has since become a little crypto-friendly, even launching its native cryptocurrency back in 2020. Earlier this year, JPMorgan started hiring Ethereum and blockchain developers as it continues to explore the technology.
In April 2021, the Wall Street bank reportedly planned to launch a Bitcoin fund for private clients with NYDIG, a digital asset financial services firm, serving as custodian.

Partnering with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and supported by BETC, a French advertising agency, Lacoste has kicked off a three-year partnership called “Save Our Species”. Instead of the familiar green croc, their new line of classic, unisex Limited-Edition polo shirts will feature embroidered images of ten extremely endangered species.
Chances are that you have never seen any of these animals, nor even are aware of most of them. On Lacoste’s website, you’ll find detailed descriptions of each species, how poaching and loss of habitat are decimating their numbers, and exactly how close the world is to losing them forever.
These polos are extremely limited in number – and the reason why will break your heart. The number for sale corresponds to the number of animals of each species that remain in the wild. Only 67 Javan Rhinos and 350 Sumatran Tigers are roaming free. And only 30 Vaquita, also known as the Gulf of California porpoise, remain. It is one of the most endangered species on our planet. A single shirt has been made for each one.

The Chicago Bulls legend’s accomplishments on the court were transcendent but his style was accessible, thanks to the flashy Nike shoes, named for him, which he wore while making gravity-defying dunks.
To Ndongala, now a 32-year-old author, owning a pair of Jordans was more than just a way to emulate his favourite hoops player. When he eventually immigrated to the US, they became a cultural talisman that helped him connect with Americans. “It doesn’t matter if you’re black or white, because if you are wearing Jordans, there’s a commonality between you,” he says.
In 2010, Ndongala settled in Cut Bank, Montana, population 2,900. The brutal winters made him question his choice. “I had been thinking, ‘What am I doing in this town? There are hardly any African Americans out there,’” he says. But that year, Ndongala discovered Norman’s Sport & Western, a local store that sold an impressive selection of Jordan shoes: “When I found Norman’s, it was like, ‘Oh my goodness, I’m home.’”

They were part of Nike’s earliest retail network, staking a physical foothold for the company when it was just beginning as a shoe distributor. “We supported Nike and Jordan when they weren’t even that cool,” says Teri Bickford, manager of Norman’s, which has now carried products with the iconic “swoosh” logo for more than 40 years. But by the time Ndongala discovered Norman’s, mom-and-pop stores had been eclipsed as the driver of Nike sales by international chains and ecommerce. Instead of simply competing against other sports brands such as Adidas or Under Armour on the shelves at Foot Locker, Nike faced new rivals, including Lululemon, a yoga-pants specialist with its own store network, and, later, digital-first brands such as Outdoor Voices. Consumers no longer had to go to the mall to browse the latest gear.
“Our world is changing,” wrote then chief executive Mark Parker in Nike’s annual report in 2008. “The digital age is fuelling change at its fastest rate in history. Power is in the hands of consumers. They have near infinite choices and unlimited access to those choices . . . To be relevant, to be accepted, a company must bring its authentic self to market.”
As the digital landscape has continued to change at pace over the past decade, so too has the manner in which Nike has presented its “authentic self”. Synonymous with the “Just Do It” advertising campaign that began in 1988 (the first commercial told the story of Walt Stack, an 80-year-old who ran 17 miles each morning), Nike has always been a brand that stands for sport as self-empowerment. But it has also been quick to embrace growing movements for social justice, using its clout to signal support for causes such as the inclusion of girls in sport and the fight against HIV/Aids.

“Women have a deep passion for the brand,” said Andrea Perez, vice president and general manager of women’s at Jordan. “They are really interested in sneakers now and the spring collection is the first step of a long-term commitment to this customer.”The brand expounded on that commitment during a panel that took place at Spring Street Studios in New York on Thursday afternoon, which included Perez along with Linda Mai-Lotti, concept design director at Jordan; Jeni McDonald, product line manager of women’s footwear; Maya Moore, a WNBA player and brand partner, and Aleali May, a model and fashion consultant.
The company, which, according to the NPD Group, dropped from second to third place as the most popular sneaker — Nike nabbed the number-one spot and Adidas climbed to second place surpassing Jordan for the first time — has spent the past couple of years speaking to women to get a better understanding of what they want out of their sneakers.
“We were really inspired by true insights coming from her,” said Perez, who added that women are looking for premium fabrics, special details and comfort.
From these findings the designers created the spring collection, which includes 10 different colorways of the Jordan 1 silhouette made from satin and suede fabrications with a raised Nike check. They retail for $160 and will be released on Jan. 25. A laceless, zip-up version of the Jordan 1s with a sock liner retails for $150 and will be released on March 8, and the Jordan 12s Vachetta Tan, which are made from a tan suede and accented with gold hardware, will retail for $190 and will be released on March 23.We think about the consumer as a spectrum,” Perez said. “You have someone like Maya Moore, a basketball champ, and when we do footwear for her on court, we have to design to certain specifications. Then you have women who are more street inspired and they want our classics. And some are more fashion driven and they want more trends.”
According to Perez, they will be releasing the sneaker at specialty boutiques including Kith and CNCPTS, and also working with Pinterest on social commerce. There is also a dedicated women’s page on Jordan’s e-commerce site.
For the past couple of years, streetwear and athletic brands have homed in on women. Nike has targeted this ecosystem by partnering with the International Girl Crew, a group of creative, sneaker-wearing friends with strong Instagram followings and impressive careers including Paloma Elsesser, Grace Ladoja, Phoebe Lovatt, Sharmadean Reid, Camille Garmendia and Madeline Poole. Before Jordan worked with May on a Jordan 6 in Millennial pink, which was only for friends and family, and a Jordan 1 in silver and black, the brand worked with Vashtie Kola on a lavender version of the Jordan 2 in 2010. Perez said now the Jordan brand is more committed to long-term initiatives in the women’s space. There will be more releases throughout the year and the look book images styled by May hint at an apparel push down the line.
