But new research from the University of Georgia suggests that convenience potentially comes at a cost—your personal security.

The study focused on smart home hubs, the centralized device that enables you to control all your smart devices in one easy spot. These hubs rely on technology that connects them—but not your individual smart devices—to the internet.
That's important because the hubs theoretically make using the smart devices safer. In the past, cybercriminals have hacked into internet-connected baby monitors or smart cameras in people's homes, enabling them to monitor their target's comings and goings.

But the UGA researchers developed a system called ChatterHub that can successfully disclose the cyber activity of a variety of smart hubs almost 90% of the time.

"The good thing is all traffic to and from a smart home hub is encrypted," said Kyu Lee, lead author of the study and an associate professor in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences. Lee is also the associate director of UGA's Institute of Cybersecurity and Privacy. "The bad thing is that we were able to use machine learning technology to figure out what much of the activity is without even having to decrypt the information."

ChatterHub doesn't have to be physically close to the system it's hacking. And the hacker doesn't need any prior knowledge of the types of smart devices or the maker of the hub to break into the system remotely.

Smart hubs send packets of information to and from individual devices. That's what enables you to flick on some music through an app or to check your Ring camera when you're out and get a delivery.

Those information packets are encrypted, meaning an outsider can't know exactly what's said in them.

"For example, when a smart home lock is locked, it sends a packet to the hub, and the smart home hub passes that onto the server," Lee said. "We cannot see the actual information that the lock has locked, but using the patterns, the size of the packet and the timing of the packet, we can figure that information out with very high accuracy."They can figure out daily patterns of homeowners and determine whether someone is home at a given time, leaving the homeowner vulnerable to a break-in.

Perhaps more concerningly, they can inject their own random packet into the information going to and from the hub.

"If we inject some garbage packet in the patterns we figured out from the machine learning programs, that packet will be delivered to the smart lock and potentially make it malfunction," Lee said. "So that can actually prevent the homeowner from locking their door."

If the criminals are smart, you probably won't even know your door isn't locked since the app will say it's correctly locked, just like usual. So while you may think your house is secure, the hackers know it's not.

Cybercriminals can use a similar tactic to drain the batteries in smart devices by bombarding the hub with useless packets, the researchers said. But this strategy runs the risk of the smart home hub alerting the homeowner to a low battery.

First, I’ll share what bike rack I use, and it was one that I found on Amazon for a reasonable price. It is the KAC Overdrive K2 2″ Rack. It supports bikes up to 60 lbs each. Anyway, you’ll obviously need a receiver hitch on your car for a car rack that can support the weight of electric bikes. I use a local shop that specializes in installing such accessories rather than a car dealer. That usually saves quite a bit of money. Whoever you use you want to make sure that they install the hitch that is rated for your specific vehicle.

Some cars can only support 1.25″ receivers and others can support either 1.25″ or 2″ receivers. It depends upon how much weight your vehicle is rated to support. There are different classes of hitches, and any reputable shop would know about this.

The rack supports regular size tire and fat tire ebikes, as well as those with a step-thru frame. As it comes, it’s only able to support one step-thru frame and a mid-step or high-step frame bike. This is because the arms that hold the frame are on the same pole and have to be at different heights.Using the KAC Overdrive rack becomes very painless. It’s not time-consuming to attach it to the car once you’ve done it a few times. I keep all the smaller parts in a box, so I don’t lose them. It’s not terribly heavy to lift to attach to the car. I’m able to do it myself as a petite woman.

If you’re going to be hauling more than one bike you’ll likely need help from another person for the bike that will be closest to the back of the car because it will have to go behind the vertical post of the rack. See the photo below.

It’s much easier to lift a bike onto the rack farthest from the car, and in front of the vertical bar, and that’s what I typically do. It would be better to have the weight closer to the car however.

If there’s anything negative I can about the KAC Overdrive rack is that it is difficult to place the bike nearest to the vehicle onto it because of its design. Again, it’s definitely doable with two people, but there are better bike rack designs for two heavy ebikes.

One that is very popular is from Thule. The Thule EZ Fold X2 has a lot of convenient features. It is twice as expensive as the KAC rack, but it may be worth the extra cost. It also can be used with both 2″ and 1.25″ receivers.

Caulk vs. Sealant
Before going a step further, you might have heard caulk called a sealant and vice versa. Technically, the two serve the same purpose—sealing a space, making it airtight or waterproof. But there is a significant difference between them; sealants are used on objects that shift or move, like windows, for example. A sealant is used when you need more elasticity so it can shift with the moving object it's sealing. Meanwhile, caulk is best suited for filling the space where the shower tiles meet the top of the bathtub—both surfaces are stationary. Also, caulk's significant benefit over sealant is that acrylic latex can be painted on, while sealant can't.
Types of Caulk
Caulk comes in many options: different colors, fast-drying, and sanded vs. unsanded. Sanded, grainy-textured caulk works best sealing wet spaces and large gaps of 1/8-inch or more. Unsanded has a smooth texture and appearance, working best on kitchen countertops and backsplashes.

Caulks are water-based, like acrylic or latex, or solvent-based, like polyurethane, silicone, or butyl rubber. Solvent-based caulks require mineral spirits or other strong solvents to remove them, while acrylic and latex products do not. Also, you can get caulks that are a hybrid like silicone and polyurethane combined.
Acrylic latex caulk is the general-purpose workhorse. It's inexpensive and fast-drying and is useful for many different applications. Most importantly, it can be painted and is sometimes termed "painter's caulk."

Use this caulk for filling small gaps and blemishes in wood trim and for sealing joints between wood parts that you will paint. While the label may claim it's suitable for wet areas, it's best to stick to dry areas or on parts that may see moisture (like exterior trim and siding) but will be protected by a complete coating of paint.
Latex or acrylic caulk with silicone added offers somewhat more moisture resistance than standard latex caulk. Thanks to the silicone, it's also a bit more flexible and durable. You can use this in the same places as standard latex caulk and for exposed (unpainted) applications that need only moderate waterproofing.

Pure, or 100 percent, silicone is the premium caulk for jobs exposed to water. Silicone caulk is expensive but worth the cost due to its flexibility and long life. Most formulas are mildew-resistant and have inhibitors to slow discoloration (but all caulk gets ugly over time). The only big downside is that it's not paintable. But that shouldn't be a problem for its typical applications. If a silicone caulk says you can paint it, it's probably not pure silicone.

Silicone will work on roofs and windows or doors, but it's not the best option for those applications. Instead, use a high-quality roofing sealant for roof work, and use a high-quality window and door sealant (not latex caulk) for installing and sealing windows and doors. (It lasts as long as silicone and is paintable.)

This sticky, messy caulk is primarily for outdoor use. It's an excellent sealant for metal and masonry and for joints that might move due to expansion and contraction. A good example is gutters. It also fills larger joints nicely when used with a caulking rod or backer rod. Many formulas are paintable.

Also called fireplace caulk, refractory caulk is a high-temperature sealant suitable for filling small cracks in brick, concrete, and other masonry materials, specifically in masonry fireplaces and chimneys. Use this only for minor repairs, such as filling tiny gaps between bricks in a firebox. It's not suitable as a masonry replacement or for significant repairs.

The customizable bungee retention in this bag is excellent. It expands your carrying capabilities on your waist instead of filling up space on your plate carrier. It doesn't limit you to certain-sized items fitting in premade loops but provides excellent retention and easy customization. This feature is unique to CRO and found in all of their equipment. The internal vertical sleeve pockets are convenient for flatter and smaller items, as they can hold many of them, including NCDs, casualty cards, chest seals, etc. However, one of the best features is the wings on the sides of the IFAK that can fit CRO Medium Bleeder pouches or tourniquet covers.
After doing a rapid MARCH assessment or treating a casualty that is being treated by teammates already, I can quickly reach into the Hybrid IFAK and access a premade kit such as an IO, IV, or suction and pass it off to somebody to use. At the same time, I can focus on blood admin/preparation, drug admin, or preparing more advanced interventions as needed. The ability to carry medic-specific items in the "hybrid" IFAK style pouch is ideal and makes a ton of sense for medics integrated into a team.
I had extra space in one of my Medium Bleeder pouches after packing a pulse-ox and EMMA device. I decided to throw in some basics that aren't lifesaving interventions but still are valuable for patient care. Tape is always needed, and by running the bungee through the roll of tape at the top of the pouch, I found that it sat perfectly above the pulse-ox and EMMA to give the bag a fuller feeling. Additionally, I found room for a headlamp. Headlamps are always needed in a pinch, and if I were to only have my Hybrid IFAK on in a dark environment, I could quickly reach in and throw that on and continue patient care.

When building out my Hybrid IFAK, I wanted it to be more advanced than a teammate's IFAK and have enough interventions to treat a casualty or two almost entirely without digging into my med bag. It has primary interventions for "M" in the MARCH algorithm (extra wound packing supplies) and advanced interventions for ARC (cric kit and basic suction/finger-thoracostomy kit/IV/IO, along with a premade TXA kit). It is a perfect middle-ground between an IFAK and my med bag.
While training, the Hybrid IFAK sits on my lower back. When I need to treat a patient, I rotate it around to grab supplies quickly, and if I'm in a secure position and can sit on the patient for a few minutes, I detach it from my waist and place it next to me or on the patient. Running slimmer mag pouches/placards makes visualizing its contents much easier when it's on your waist. Wearing a dangler pouch below my plate carrier tends to impede working out of the Hybrid IFAK, making things a little more awkward regarding accessibility. “It makes us feel at ease that now the deputies are going to have the tools to not only save themselves in a life-threatening situation, but also a victim they may encounter while on patrol and add a savings to the community,” Maines said.

The kits will supply every cruiser and can buy some time when deputies are in rural areas awaiting EMS to arrive on-scene.

“It could be upwards of 30-35 minutes before an ambulance could get to,” Maines said. “So it speaks volumes to know that now we'll have the tools to go ahead and stop that bleeding or stop that chest wound and at least stabilize them until the ambulance can get there.”

Dave Jardon worked with MTM Molded Products in Dayton to create the plastic ammunition boxes for the kits. He also worked with the Freestore Foodbank in Cincinnati to gather the hand sanitizers for the kit.
