Perhaps the only upside to last Thursday’s blow out loss to the Steelers is that it afforded us little material upon which to base this column. The Panthers Julius Peppers Jersey , for better or worse, had only one opportunity to make an aggressively conservative decision. Their failure was mostly on the players. We’d be auditioning for Cirque du Soleil if we could contort ourselves enough to blame Ron Rivera and his staff for this one.The Panthers have been all over the place this season, but they have been trending towards being a more aggressive and more confident team. Half of the space in this column has been spent praising Ron Rivera for not punting on his opponent’s side of the field. The other half has been lamenting the early-season penchant for running the ball into loaded boxes or not trying to score before half time. Counting our praise for Rivera as a win and our criticism as a loss week to week, you’d come up with a similar record as the Panthers. They are 5-3 in the Turtle, and that will be six wins after today. The records aren’t identical, however. We have praised them after losses and damned them after wins. Today is going to be another praise worthy loss for one reason: we aren’t talking at all about the fourth down the Panthers converted on their opening touchdown drive.I’ll forgive everyone for forgetting the opening drive given what came immediately after. I like to remember it, though, because it was a magical time. The Panthers opened with more confidence and more success than I can remember seeing in years. They didn’t see a third down until they were knocking on the door of the red zone. It was a third and nine from the 30 yard line. Cam Newton scrambled for eight yards to set up fourth and one from the 22.All seven Panthers teams that Rivera has coached in the past would be expected to kick the field goal and walk away from their opening drive with points. I don’t know if he is feeling better about his team or if Norv Turner has actually had that much influence. Either way, I like it. Christian McCaffrey got two yards on fourth and one and scored a touchdown on the very next play.The Steelers game obviously didn’t hinge on the Panthers ability to convert that fourth down chance. It didn’t come down to the four point difference between that touchdown and the field goal everybody else expected them to kick. But we’ve all watched the games that did come down to that difference. Rivera’s lack of hesitation to go for it, to go for the win, is the kind of coaching I’ve been calling for his entire career.The Panthers still have a lot of questions to answer about their current personnel and how suited they are for this or any NFL team after they got exposed on Thursday. As a fan, I’m head-in-the-sand hoping that the offensive line and the defensive secondary just picked the same day to have a historically bad day. As a recruit, Little was highly regarded. He was rated as a five-star prospect and the No. 1 offensive tackle according to all the major recruiting services. With Laremy Tunsil off to the NFL, Little stepped into a starting role immediately. He played in every game as a freshman and started five at left tackle. Little was named to the All-SEC team during his final year in Oxford, Miss. Little’s athletic testing was below average at the Combine. He posted a -0.5 sigma, which is in the 30.1st percentile according to SPARQ. Film reviewLittle has the potential to be an elite pass protector once he enters the NFL. He has the ideal size and length to be a mainstay on the left side. The high level traits Little possesses are the grip strength to control defensive ends, the knee bend to anchor, and the intelligence to pick up on blitzes or stunts. Little keeps a wide base James Color Rush Bradberry Jersey , but it’s what he does upon contact that is impressive. He drops his hips, but he’s also able to place his hands in an advantageous spot to prevent the edge rusher from gaining any ground.Little is able to control the edge rusher on this rep with his outstanding grip strength. This is where his length benefits him. He locks out his hands at the snap, which allows him to place his hands on the chest plate. Little doesn’t allow contact to phase him. He has a smooth kick slide, keeps his feet underneath his frame, but then drops his hips to establish leverage. Defenders did not have much success beating Little with power all season. The edge defender is able to establish his inside hand on Little’s chest, but ultimately it goes nowhere. Little keeps a wide base to again establish his low pad level. With the outside hand on the edge rusher’s chest, Little prevents any further penetration by combating the long arm with his opposite hand. Little has an effective kick slide. He stays low in his stance, but due to his wide frame he gains plenty of depth on the arc to prevent any pressures. Little doesn’t wait to react to the edge rusher thanks to his length. The edge rusher looks as if he’s going to be executing a speed rush, but Little initiates the contact to establish his control. Little, again, faces a long arm rush by the edge rusher. As he snaps into his kick slide, he shows how advanced his hand usage is to keep one hand high and the other low. While Little’s length is an asset, his hand placement is still inconsistent. He doesn’t land his punch within the chest of the edge rusher Ian Thomas Jersey , which prevents Little from using his grip strength to control. Former Bengals and Cowboys offensive line coach Paul Alexander mentioned in his scouting report that Little moved his post foot too soon, which gave the edge rusher an advantage. Alexander goes on to mention that this is a correctable area as he transitions to the pros.Little is an inconsistent run blocker. He doesn’t show the same functional strength or explosive burst to drive off the snap. His pad level on this snap isn’t optimal, which causes him to lose his base.Ole Miss ran a version of the air raid last season, so it’s not surprising Little isn’t a refined run blocker. Little’s EPA when Ole Miss ran to his gap was -3.5, which is less than ideal. However, as I said in my scouting report on Washington State offensive tackle Andre Dillard, run blocking isn’t a prerequisite in the modern NFL or for the Panthers. Christian McCaffrey created plenty of yards on his own and Norv Turner did an admirable job of scheming up run concepts despite the issues at left tackle in 2018. Fit with CarolinaLittle is an outstanding pass protector. According to Sports Info Solutions, he only allowed four blown blocks in pass protection in 2018. The left tackle situation has been a massive black hole for Carolina since Jordan Gross retired in 2014. The Panthers re-signed Daryl Williamswho has made his career on the right side. Taylor Moton hasn’t played left tackle in his entire football career outside of Week 1 in 2018. The Panthers need a natural left tackle and Little is exactly that. I don’t know how the Panthers will shuffle the positions between Moton and Williams, but Little can step in on Day 1 and improve the entire unit as a pass protector. He should be in consideration as early as their first round pick.

And I do think this is the best opportunity the Cowboys have had in years, perhaps since the glory years of the early 1990s, to make a run at that elusive sixth Lombardi Trophy.And it may be strictly a one-year shot.There are several things that contribute to this idea. The years have taken a physical toll on Tyron Smith, and while he still is one of the best left tackles in the league, he also has missed games in recent seasons as the damage to his body piles up. Travis Frederick is of course still recovering from the GBS that cost him last season. Zack Martin and DeMarcus Lawrence are at the height of their talent Tavon Austin Jersey , but time always wins, and there is no assurance they will still be playing at the same level even a year from now.And contract considerations play a big role. He rightfully points out that the team cannot keep all of them, and some of them are big names, like Jaylon Smith. Some hard decisions are looming, and it could negatively impact the overall talent in Dallas.Countering that is how Dak Prescott just has three years under his belt. The team will get him extended, and his best years are ahead of him. The question is just how long the cast around him can be kept at a high level. The team does have some rising stars like Jaylon Smith and Leighton Vander Esch, and Cooper likely has several seasons left in his prime, but no team can retain all its best players in today’s free agency and salary cap environment.And Ezekiel Elliott has been worked hard his first three seasons. There is always the question of when that will catch up to him. For both him and Prescott, this is a year when the team needs to capitalize on them.It’s a contract year for Jason Garrett, tooWe have seen how the head coach has done some of his best work under those conditions, in 2014 when he finally broke the string of 8-8 seasons and got the team into the playoffs. If the Cowboys do not make a deep run this year, it is widely believed he will not be brought back. So you know Garrett is going to be doing everything he can to move the team forward. He has an extra challenge with new offensive coordinator Kellen Moore. Rookie OCs don’t often hit their stride right way.And no matter who the team would replace him with Dorance Armstrong Jr. Jersey , a first-year head coach is not likely to see great success. There will inevitably be changes in the scheme and approach, and those usually take more than a season to shake out. Even though many have wanted Garrett supplanted for years, it would almost certainly lead to a step back, at least at first.So Garrett has to get it done now, or things get much, much harder. And even if he does do enough to keep his job, those other things still loom for the future.The sum of these factors is that this is the time to go all in. There is a window here, even with Moore having to prove himself under fire. And it will not likely be as open in 2020. Ever since the release of Dan Bailey, Cowboys fans have felt a little uneasy whenever Brett Maher trots onto the field. The former CFL kicker surprised everyone by winning the kicker job last September, and it’s been a mixed bag to say the least. Sure, Maher’s got the leg, last year he wasted no time taking over first and second place for the longest kick in Cowboys history. Interestingly, he jumped the two kickers that beat him out for a job when he entered the league in 2013.It wouldn’t surprise if he ended up breaking Matt Prater’s NFL’s record for longest kick of 64 yards.The leg strength of Maher isn’t the issue, but rather his accuracy as he is having problems hitting the easy ones. For some reason, as Andrew Gutierrez on Twitter so elegantly put it - the Maheratti doesn’t go under 50. That’s clever, but there’s also a little truth to it. Maher has knocked down 6/7 kicks of 50+ yards or more (86%) Cheap Tyrone Crawford Youth Jersey , but he drops down to 13/19 (68%) on kicks less than 50 yards. That’s very odd. Kickers are supposed to become less accurate the farther out they are, but not the Maheratti.It’s very concerning for Cowboys fans to realize that a game-winning drive could end up not being game-winning if their kicker launches a shankopotamus on what many would expect to be a gimme field goal. And as we’ve seen with Maher so far this summer - nothing is a gimme.The frustrating part is that the coaching staff isn’t bringing in an outside kicker to give Maher any competition. Most notably, veteran kicker Matt Bryant remains unsigned. The 44-year old former Atlanta Falcons Pro Bowl kicker injured his hamstring last year, but he’s coming off a season where he made 20 of 21 kicks, including a perfect 16/16 for kicks under 50 yards. Why wouldn’t the Cowboys bring him in?Outside of Bryant, it’s slim pickings around the leagues as the Minnesota Vikings were forced to trade for Baltimore Ravens backup Kaare Vedvik, costing them a fifth-round pick in next year’s draft. It appears the Vikings have their own reservations about Bailey after extending him to a one-year deal this offseason.So, while other teams are doing stuff to address their kicker situation, the Cowboys just sit on their hands as they sell all of us on the idea they are perfectly content with what they have. But could one of the reasons for this calmness be because they already have competition for Maher in the form of backup punter Kasey Redfern?Redfern has essentially been an afterthought because nobody believes he’s going to replace current punter Chris “Puntisher” Jones for his job. But there’s a little twist that could be rather interesting going forward. Redfern also pulls double-duty as a kicker. Mickey Spagnola had this to say about the Cowboys other “kicker” back in June:Redfern has had his own consistency issues in camp, but could there be a silver lining within his misses?Redfern is very raw as a kicker, but what if he starts dialing in his short game? Could he be the preferred choice for shorter kicks and keep Maher around for the big ones? The idea to keep two kickers on this roster seems absurd, but that’s exactly what they did in 2009 when they kept David Buehler around despite already having Nick Folk. Buehler had the big leg and was used for kickoffs and longer field goals. As nice of a luxury as that would be, the Cowboys don’t have the roster space to keep two kickers, that is unless one of them was also moonlighting as the team’s punter. Which brings us to the question - how’s Chris Jones doing?With Maher and Redfern both able to punt Dallas Cowboys Chris Jones Jersey , they are not only competing with each other, but they could put a little pressure on Jones as well. It may seem weird to think Jones’ job is even up for grabs after a very strong season just a couple years ago. In 2017, Jones finished first in the league in percentage of punts inside the 20-yard line as well as netting the lowest return average. However, last season - his numbers dipped considerably.And on Saturday, he only had one punt attempt, and it didn’t go very far.Redfern, on the other hand - had a better showing. He had punts of 48, 46, and then boomed a 62-yarder before bouncing into the end zone.This isn’t to say Redfern is going to replace Jones as the team’s punter, but the team is certainly giving him chances. The same chances Maher got with field goals last year. What could be going on though is the team has three legs competing for two jobs. It’s still early and things can change, but as we’ve learned plenty from this organization recently - what someone did a couple years ago doesn’t mean a whole lot if they’re not what’s best for the team now. Football is a meritocracy...especially for kickers. A look at some key fantasy questions going into Week 4:IS THIS AS GOOD AS IT GETS FOR ANDREW LUCK?Fantasy players rejoiced when Luck was finally cleared to play this preseason. Not only would they be able to once again roster the gritty QB, but they also hoped a healthy Luck would help the production of his former top 5 fantasy receiver, T.Y. Hilton. Some suggested Luck had lost some of the old zip on his throws this preseason, and although he's made all three of his starts Womens Chris Jones 2019 Jersey , his yards per pass attempt has dipped each week. Entering Week 4, Luck is QB21 in fantasy scoring. Is Luck throwing short quick passes to offset his still underachieving offensive line, or is he throwing short because Hilton is his only deep ball threat?The fact that backup QB Jacoby Brissett was called upon to throw the last Hail Mary pass in their last game is telling. We might not see the old Luck until next season, if ever.WHICH UNDER-THE-RADAR RB HAS THE OPPORTUNITY FOR A BIG WEEK?Last week, rookie Kerryon Johnson became the first Lions RB to rush for over 100 yards since 2013. This week he has a very appealing matchup against the Cowboys, who will be without their big-time defensive playmaker, linebacker Sean Lee. He has been ruled out due to a hamstring strain.The Cowboys defense has been notoriously bad when Lee has been forced to miss games. Last season, opposing RBs ran for almost 2 more yards per carry without Lee in the Cowboys lineup. Since 2015, the Cowboys have yielded almost 8 more points and 56 more yards per game when Lee has been sidelined. Johnson's carries per game have increased each week and without Lee, the Cowboys defense could let Johnson run for another 100-plus yards.CAN I START PATRIOTS RB SONY MICHEL EVERY WEEK?If you've been playing fantasy for a while you know how tough it is to figure out what type of offense the Patriots will run in any given week. Still, Michel carried the ball a career high 14 times last week, and with Rex Burkhead on injured reserve it would make sense for Michel, a first-round draft pick, to get the majority of the early-down work. But this is still the Patriots. However, in point-per-reception leagues, he is 22nd in scoring. Hunt is coming off a two-TD performance but his overall rushing numbers are way off the pace he set in his rookie season. His fantasy production is also suffering because new Chiefs starting QB Patrick Mahomes doesn't check down as much as former QB Alex Smith used to.With Mahomes behind center, it's going to be hard for Hunt to replicate his 53-catch 2017 season. Hunt is still far and away the Chiefs leader in rushing attempts (52). Hunt forced more missed tackles than any other RB last season and plays in a high-powered offense that executes the seventh-highest percentage of run plays. If you own him, keep him. If you don't, you might want to try to buy low on him.WHICH QBS SHOULD I CONSIDER STREAMING WEEKLY?If you're looking to stream quarterbacks it might be best to think two weeks ahead, to ensure you're able to pick up the QB you want off the waiver wire. Injuries, age, and a lack of attention from management all played their part in constructing a roster that was good enough to compete against most teams, but bad enough to lose to them as well. Here is a look at the top needs the Panthers need to address on their roster to make sure that 2019 isn’t plagued by the same curse.QuarterbackCam Newton is progressing well, by all accounts, from recent surgery on his throwing shoulder. That is great news for the Panthers because two games without him, and six more with him only being mildly healthy, proved this team is not built to win without number one on the field. The Panthers have to bring in some additional talent to compete for the privilege of being the break-in-case-of-emergency option in the event that Newton’s recovery stalls out. Kyle Allen or Taylor Heinicke might prove to be that option https://www.carolinapanthersfanshop.com … lil-Jersey , but the team cannot afford to assume that they will be. There has to be competition to be certain.Offensive tackleThe Panthers dealt with a rough stretch of injuries at the offensive tackle position before the 2018 season even started. Matt Kalil and soon to be free agent Daryl Williams had little to no impact on this season. Even losing Amini Silatolu felt like an actual loss. Kalil will likely be on the roster in 2019, whether or not he has an impact on the season is anybody’s guess. He is perennially back from injury, this year will be no different. Williams is the more intriguing athlete, he has neither the contract nor the injury history that weighs down expectations for Kalil. There has been no indication yet as to the Panthers plans for this position in the coming year, but it is unlikely they are going to start the year with Taylor Moton as the only healthy tackle under contract.CenterRyan Kalil has retired after 12 seasons, five Pro Bowls, and two first team All Pro honors. Tyler Larsen, the heir apparent, has been OK in relief of an oft-injured Kalil in the past two seasons and is under contract through 2020. This won’t be the highest priority for the Panthers this year, but don’t be surprised to see them drop a high draft pick if the right guy comes along.Defensive endThe Panthers ranked 27th in the league in 2018 with only 35 sacks. It seems, in hindsight, that relying on a 37 year old defensive lineman to be one of your premiere pass rushers might have been a mistake. Mario Addison is still a good defensive end, but he can’t play by himself. Ron Rivera’s defense requires putting pressure on the quarterback. That starts up front. The Panthers absolutely must invest, in either free agency or the draft, in improving their talent at defensive end if they want to field a defense that looks professional. SafetyEric Reid and Mike Adams combined last year to form a fairly competent pair of safeties. That is remarkable for one guy who didn’t have an off season and another who has probably seen too many. Neither of them are still under contract in 2019 and neither of them are guaranteed to be options for the Panthers in free agency. Reid may be too expensive and Adams is pushing 38. Rashaan Gaulden and Colin Jones can’t be the top two safeties heading into training camp.These are the top needs for the Carolina Panthers running into 2019. There will be a lot of options in both free agency and the draft to address them. It’s difficult for a rookie taken in the first few rounds to make the jump to the NFL and have a consistent impact. It’s a challenge to keep your head from spinning early in your first training camp. All of that amps up when you’re an undrafted rookie free agent like Dineen is with the Denver Broncos. If he wants to become the latest undrafted player to find a spot on Denver’s roster, he knows he has no room for error. After his fourth training camp practice, the middle linebacker from the University of Kansas known as “The Mayor” is starting to get a little calloused. You could say the man who is known to tackle everything in sight, is ready to tackle the biggest challenge of his young career. “I’m just trying to earn my stripes and make an impact on special teams,” Dineen told me after practice on Sunday. “Just continue learning. You come out here, you’re not used to the altitude. And then you put pads on, and then you just keep adding and adding. We’re getting there slowly, and I feel like I’m getting used to it.” Of course, it doesn’t hurt Dineen’s growing familiarity to play in a system like he is either. Since Vic Fangio was hired as the head coach of the Broncos, we’ve heard how player-friendly his system is. We see that just four days into training camp. “It’s awesome,” Dineen said. “A lot free running around and trying to make plays all over the place. I feel like that’s where I’m the most comfortable. It doesn’t handicap the players at all. It’s exciting. It’s really an exciting time.” The other benefit that playing in Fangio’s system offers is in helping players find ways to improve their game. Dineen said he is getting there slowly, but he’s still a rookie who has to get better practice to practice. The injury to Todd Davis might open the door to more reps and the chance to stand out with the coaches. “He’s learning how to become an NFL linebacker, and there’s a lot that goes in that,” Fangio said after practice on Sunday.” Especially in our system Shane Ray Jersey , we put a lot on those guys, but the good thing about it is that a lot of it goes hand in hand and it fits logically. Once they get it, everything becomes a little bit easier. It’s a hard job for a rookie to come in and learn.”As for the specifics Dineen needs to strengthen ...“I think I need to use my hands better,” he said. “And then just continue to work on coverage drops and man drops and stuff like that. And then, obviously, make an impact on special teams.” What adds to the intrigue surrounding Dineen isn’t just that’s he an undrafted rookie and whether he can become the latest success story for the franchise. It’s where he played college football and how similar his story is to Chris Harris Jr. That’s not to say Dineen will become Harris, but that connection makes it a skosh more fun.“Being from Kansas, that’s what everyone who plays football there wants to be,” Dineen said. “Especially me being an undrafted guy, it’s really cool. Hopefully I can try and follow in his footsteps. And he’s actually really great to the rooks. He’s a leader. He’s always willing to lend a helping hand. He’s a great guy.”What is also fun to contemplate is what Dineen will look like when the preseason games begin. That’s when he can shine and it’s way more conducive to how he plays. Dineen is a tackling machine, and whether he’s on defense or special teams, he’s a player to watch. “I try to mimic (the games) out here, and I got in trouble a few times (Saturday) because out here you can’t bring them down. But it’s the second-round draft pick of Risner that really has this o-line improving over 2018. The former Kansas State guard - and also Wiggins, Colorado, native - held an 87 overall PFF college grade throughout his four years and even hit above 90 in overall and pass-blocking grades during his senior year.
