Synchronizing CFRF’s expansion with the prepreg’s curing timing is significantly faster than with conventional processes. The prepreg thermosetting resin penetrates the porous CFRF to bond the skin and core materials without using adhesives, for a highly reliable bonding structure. Toray’s technology paves the way to quickly producing large CFRP components.

CFRF offers significantly better strength, elastic modulus, and impact resistance than conventional core materials. Its low specific gravity range of 0.2 to 0.4 can enhance performance and lighten sandwich structures. Toray demonstrated its concept by using a pressing machine to create a large automobile roof panel (1.2m long x 1.2m wide x 2.3mm thick) in just five minutes. This was 10-fold faster than the conventional approach. The company assessed rigidity tests, coatability, sound insulation properties, and other practical aspects for automobile production. Amid the hype and the hellfire, there’s been a lot of confusion around what types of vehicles are at risk of starting a fire, why lithium battery fires are so prevalent and so deadly, how to stay safe and what governments are doing to alleviate the risk as electric bikes and scooters take hold.

The bad news is that e-bike, e-scooter and e-moped battery fires aren’t going away anytime soon. The good news is that we can stop the spread by raising awareness about why they happen and how to avoid them.
Why do battery fires happen?
There’s a chemical and a practical answer to this question. The chemical answer is that lithium-ion cells undergo a process called thermal runaway, which results in a sharp increase of battery cell temperature and pressure, accompanied by the release of flammable gas. The flammable gas can ignite from the battery’s high temperature, resulting in a quick fire that’s hard to put out and emits toxic fumes.

Experts who spoke to TechCrunch say cheap e-bikes and low-quality batteries — often imported from China — are more likely to explode due to a lower-quality manufacturing process. If battery companies cut corners or use cheap materials, there’s more likely to be a defect that can lead the cells to expand and bulge, according to Leo Raudys, president and CEO of Call2Recycle, a nonprofit battery-recycling program. If they bulge, they can burst, which can also cause thermal runaway.

“You just have to remember, you get what you pay for,” Raudys told TechCrunch. “These batteries are highly engineered devices, and if you’re only spending a couple hundred bucks on a battery, you’re probably getting one that’s cutting corners in a number of different places.”

In New York City, where food delivery workers rely on e-bikes to do their jobs, fires have been increasing at a startling rate — doubling each year from 2020 to 2022, according to Fire Department of New York data. As of July 3, 2023, there have been 114 investigations into lithium ion fires, 74 injuries and 13 deaths. That’s 13 deaths this year as a result of lithium batteries, compared to six in 2022 and four in 2021. While the FDNY doesn’t break down their stats into what types of devices caused the fires, 80 of the fires occurred in structures like homes, buildings and offices.

“If anyone has potency problem, it is advisable that such person seeks medical attention, rather than using sex enhancement drugs, because it has many underlying side effects which may result to eventual loss of life,” Ademola said.

The expert, therefore, advised people who have potency problem to avoid self-medication or use of enhancement drugs, urging them to seek medical attention for proper diagnosis and treatment.

He said that hypertensive, diabetic and aged people are at higher risk of developing complications if they use sex enhancement drugs, advising them to completely avoid using one, saying that they might die in the process.

Also speaking, chairman, Society of Gynaecology and Obstetrics of Nigeria, Lagos chapter, Dr. Joseph Akinde, advised people to desist from abusing drugs with the aim to enhance sexual performance.

Akinde noted that some people take excessive amount of it in order to enhance sexual performance, noting that most of the drugs sometimes are not specifically made for potency improvement.

He decried the use of tramadol, intake of excessive alcohol, over-the-counter sex stimulants and other intoxicants to boost sexual drive, adding that such approaches are typical drug abuse and could result in more harm than good.

Akinde listed some health implications of over-the-counter male sex enhancement drugs to include damage to the urethra, permanent difficulty maintaining an erection, permanent problems with urination, penis fractures causing bleeding and requiring surgery and dangerous drop in blood pressure.

Prof Allan Pacey, professor of andrology at the University of Sheffield, said: "There is a pressing need for an effective, reversible, oral contraceptive for men and although many different approaches have been tested over the years, none has yet reached the market.

"The approach described here, to knock out key enzyme in sperm that is critical for sperm movement, is a really novel idea. The fact that it is able to act, and be reversed, so quickly is really quite exciting.

"If the trials on mice can be replicated in humans with the same degree of efficacy, then this could well be the male contraceptive approach we have been looking for.

"They have done some tests on human sperm in the laboratory and it works in exactly the same way. So that, I think, really does open up the prospects that we can have some human trials."

Meanwhile, other researchers have been looking at a slightly different pathway to halt sperm swimming, by blocking a protein on the surface of sperm.

The mental side of sex
It’s important to realize that ED drugs don’t increase sexual desire, and you have to be ready and sexually stimulated for them to work.

"The drugs won’t work well if you are mentally or emotionally not ready for sex," says Dr. Liou. "You can’t just take a pill, pay some bills or wash the dishes, and then go to the bedroom and think you’ll be ready to go. When your mind is not there, you are not going to want sex, and no ED drug can fix that problem."

He says that before trying an ED drug, you should step back and analyze your sex life and when your ED occurs. Does it happen all the time or just in certain situations? Is it with only one partner or different ones? Does it ever happen when you masturbate? Are the problems associated with stress or alcohol?

"Asking yourself these types of questions can help identify if your ED may be more psychological than physical," says Dr. Liou. He recommends talking with your doctor about these problems.
