Part of a class action lawsuit claiming Apple benefits from scammers who deceive consumers into making payments using iTunes gift cards has been dismissed by a California federal judge.
Consumers claim Apple refuses to combat the iTunes gift card scammers, arguing it declines to do so since it gets to keep 30% as a commission.
However, U.S. District Judge Edward J. Davila dismissed claims that Apple actively helps thieves trick consumers.
The judge determined consumers failed to plead that Apple had substantially helped or encouraged the scammers.
Apple remains on the hook for several claims that the company withheld stolen property by allegedly refusing to refund consumers who fell victim to iTunes gift card fraud.
The plaintiffs allege Apple knowingly enables scammers who trick their victims into paying large amounts of money via iTunes gift cards.
The complaint says Apple allows the scams to continue because the company allegedly keeps a 30% commission on the proceeds.
The class action lawsuit points out Apple has a website dedicated to the scams, but allegedly doesn’t do much to prevent them from happening, despite calling the scams “formulaic,” Tech Crunch reported.
The plaintiffs say in addition to keeping the commission, Apple retains iTunes gift card funds for four to six weeks before paying vendors, but then falsely tells the public the scammed money is “irretrievable,” according to Tech Crunch.
The gift card scam “deprives consumers of hundreds of millions of dollars or more,” the class action lawsuit states, adding that most people never report the scam to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
However, the complaint continues, the iTunes gift card scams that were reported to the FTC between 2015 and 2019 amounted to in excess of $93.5 million.
“These publicly reported dollar amounts include the losses of only the subset of victims who fill out a detailed online FTC form asking for their personal information. As a result, this $93.5 million figure appears to be only the tip of the iceberg,” the complaint says. “Even if only 10% of scam victims report to the FTC … the iTunes gift card scam would approach $1 billion, with Apple retaining $300 million in commissions.”

The complex cascade of synchronized cellular and molecular phases in wound healing is impaired by different means, involving infection, neuropathic complexes, abnormal blood circulation, and cell proliferation at the wound region. Thus, to overcome these problems, a multifunctional wound dressing material is fabricated. In the current research work, we have fabricated a wound dressing polymeric patch, with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and chitosan (Cs) incorporated with a photocatalytic graphene nanocomposite (GO/TiO2(V-N)) and curcumin by a gel casting method, that focuses on multiple stages of the healing process. The morphology, swelling, degradation, moisture vapor transmission rate (MVTR), porosity, light-induced antibacterial activity, hemolysis, blood clotting, blood abortion, light-induced biocompatibility, migration assay, and drug release were analyzed for the polymeric patches under in vitro conditions. PVA/Cs/GO/TiO2(V-N)/Cur patches have shown enhanced wound healing in in vivo wound healing experiments on Wister rats. They show higher collagen deposition, thicker granulation tissue, and higher fibroblast density than conventional dressing. A histological study shows excellent re-epithelialization ability and dense collagen deposition. Plastic bags were invented in 1967, but only became widely used in stores in the 1970s. The most commonly found thin plastic shopping bags given out at cash registers are usually made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE), but some are made of low-density polyethylene plastic (LDPE).
The energy embodied in plastic bags comes initially from the mining of the raw materials needed to make them—natural gas and petroleum—whose extraction requires a lot of energy. The raw materials must then be refined, which requires yet more energy. Once at a processing facility, the raw materials are treated and undergo polymerization to create the building blocks of plastic. These tiny granules of polyethylene resin can be mixed with recycled polyethylene chips. They are then transported by truck, train or ship to facilities where, under high heat, an extruder shapes the plastic into a thin film. The film is flattened, then cut into pieces. A 2014 study done for the Progressive Bag Alliance, which represents the U.S. plastic bag manufacturing and recycling industry, compared grocery bags made from polyethylene (HDPE), compostable plastic, and paper with 30 percent recycled fibers. It found that the HDPE bags ultimately used less fuel and water, and produced less greenhouse gas gases, acid rain emissions, and solid waste than the other two. The study, which did not consider litter, was peer-reviewed by Michael Overcash, then a professor of chemical engineering at North Carolina State University. Because the carrying capacity of a plastic and a paper bag are not the same, the study used the carrying capacity of 1,000 paper bags as its baseline and compared their impacts to the impacts of 1,500 plastic bags. The plastic bags used 14.9kg of fossil fuels for manufacturing compared to 23.2kg for paper bags. Plastic bags produced 7kg of municipal solid waste compared to 33.9kg for paper, and greenhouse gas emissions were equivalent to 0.04 tons of CO2 compared to paper’s 0.08 tons. Plastic bags used 58 gallons of fresh water, while paper used 1,004 gallons. Energy use totaled 763 megajoules for plastic, and 2,622 megajoules for paper.

Nitrogen generators from Atlas Copco nitrogen generators have been designed to supply nitrogen on-site at up to 99.999% purity and deliver a potential 50% reduction in running costs.
“On-site industrial gas (nitrogen and oxygen) generation offers a much more sustainable and cost-efficient solution compared to cylinder or bulk liquid supply which require transport, handling, storage and administration,” notes Atlas Copco Compressor Technique’s Industrial Air division business line manager Zandra van der Westhuizen.
The company has extended its NGP+ nitrogen generator range to include nine energy-efficient, high capacity models. The NGP+ generators have been designed to protect the process application and users’ equipment investment, offering on-site nitrogen at flows ranging from 5.4 l/s (18 Nm³/h) to 867 l/s (2 870 Nm³/h). Operating with Pressure Swing Adsorption technology, the plug-and-play NGP+ nitrogen generators can be plugged into existing clean, dry compressed air installations to offer an independent, reliable, secure, flexible and cost-effective supply of nitrogen. Atlas Copco asserts that its augmented family of NGP+ nitrogen generators offers up to 50% reduction in running costs compared to other nitrogen supply methods.
The company explains that core to the NGP+ is the Carbon Molecular Sieve which allows small oxygen molecules to penetrate the pores while large nitrogen molecules by-pass the carbon molecular sieve. The NGP+ generators are equipped with an automatic “off-spec” purity control check that prevents nitrogen with a purity level less than the fixed threshold from reaching a sensitive application. Additionally, fail-safe sensors continuously monitor feed air conditions such as temperature, pressure and pressure dewpoint. “If the feed air does not match the generator’s specifications, it is automatically blown off prior to entering the machine to eradicate the risk of contamination and component damage,” explains Van der Westhuizen. “In addition, in some sectors like rubber, metal production and general industry, customers are able to refine the actual purity level required for any given application while benefitting from optimum economic operation.”
The design of the NGP+ generators includes the integration of SMARTLINK, which aligns the units with Industry 4.0 applications. The data monitoring program collects, compares and analyses data in real-time to deliver an intelligent assessment of generator system performance. Machine monitoring and assessment aims to enable customers to achieve increased reliability, reduced downtime and the identification of energy optimisation opportunities.
Atlas Copco Compressor Technique asserts that it offers a complete air solution which includes regular service and maintenance to ensure optimum, reliable and efficient performance of its equipment, offering turnkey service solutions which include industrial oil-free and oil-injected compressors, gas and process compressors and expanders, air and gas treatment equipment and air management systems.

With promises of pizza, soda and curated tunes, last weekend first-years made their way down to The Mug for a silent disco orchestrated by First-Year Programming. A silent disco—for those who don’t know—is an event where participants don bulky wireless headphones in order to have a quiet, yet still energetic, dance party alternative. First-year representatives were stationed at a makeshift DJ booth, eagerly manning three channels that participants could choose from by simply flicking a switch on their headphones. Calder Beasley ’26, Noyes House first-year representative and novice DJ, gushed about working with his fellow representatives: “Everyone really cares about their house and their fellow first-years. I am lucky to be a part of a passionate group of people that are very proactive planners.” Beasley explained that, originally the representatives had planned on the disco being an entirely decades-themed function. But ultimately the group decided to have a mix of throwbacks, Latin music and modern pop, so as to please everyone. Main House First-Year Representative Claire Gallion ’26 collaborated with Beasley in curating an ’80s-themed playlist. “For some ’80s inspiration, I texted my mom and asked for the most fun, happening songs of her youth,” Beasley noted.
The creation of other playlists, such as the pop channel, was more collaborative among all representatives. Beasely was inspired by iconic women of pop from the years 2008 to 2014, which he personally thinks is the golden age of music, with songs that consist of bold, bombastic electronic influences paired with smooth, powerful vocals. Although this was his first time DJ-ing, Beasley said that he had a fabulous time and felt connected to the crowd: “I didn’t have headphones so I could only hear people singing. Playing off the energy was key.”
Iris Li ’26 emphasized how cheerful the atmosphere was: “I felt very comfortable. I was worried the disco would be a bit awkward, but I ended up having a fantastic time.” Beyond the environment of the disco, Li enjoyed how convenient it was to switch between channels. “I loved how I could be listening to ABBA and then switch the channel to 2000s throwbacks and hear songs like ‘S&M’ by Rihanna in an instant,” she recounted. Li also explained that people were more focused on the music than the social aspect. She added that people bonded through the music, and groups connected through the shared experience of listening to the same channel. The headphones had lights that flashed either blue, green or red, depending on the channel being listened to, which made it easy to identify others who were listening to the same music. Overall, Li deemed the night a massive success. But still, there were some slight drawbacks of the experience. “It was rather sweaty. But that’s how The Mug always is. It was happy sweat. ‘Worth it’ sweat,” Li said with a laugh.
In fact, some aspects of the disco that could be potential drawbacks actually turned out to make the experience all the more memorable. Grace Montas ’26 enjoyed the “waiting room” space almost as much as the disco itself. There were only 50 headphone sets available for the night, so some students had to wait until other groups left in order to enter the event. “Despite having to wait outside The Mug for a few minutes before actually being able to go to the disco, people really made the waiting experience fun. We all enjoyed pizza while socializing. Some people even started playing music,” Montas recalled. Once inside the disco, Montas enjoyed the high-energy songs that were being played consistently throughout the night: “‘Want You Back’ by Cher Lloyd was a personal highlight for me. You could tell that everyone was screaming the lyrics and laughing even if you couldn’t hear it.”
There were even some comedic elements of the disco that heightened everyone’s enjoyment of the event. “I liked taking off my headphones and hearing everyone singing and dancing. It was quite silly how when my headphones were on it felt like I was at a lively party, but once they were off it was all squeaky and quiet,” Emma Goss ’26 [Disclaimer: Goss is Assistant Copy Editor for The Miscellany News] explained. She also agreed that the communal aspect of listening to the same channel as others was exciting. Goss added that she and her friends coordinated jumping from station to station together, so they knew they were all in sync, listening to the same jams. “My only critique is that it could have been more crowded, but I also understand that they had limited headphones. Maybe we need to invest in more headphones,” Goss pointed out. In addition to dancing to throwback tunes, Goss said that a memorable moment was forming a conga line that every participant joined in on. “If there’s anything to take away from this article… we need another disco!”
