Customizable medical kits help modernize USAF deployable assets

The “made-to-order” medical kits includes items such as bandages, gauze, pharmaceuticals, and tracheal tubes as well as a variety of support equipment and cases to house it all. The MTO kits will provide warfighters across the globe support of their unique needs and situations.
Made-to-stock kits, MTO’s predecessor, provided defined sets of material linked to a national stock number as an “all or nothing” packaged option to the warfighter.

“What’s different about [MTO] is that if a customer wants to customize a kit based on their need, based on their mission, they can do that,” Medical Integrated Supply Team Chief Abin Mathai said. “It’s an innovative collaboration between DLA, AbilityOne, NIB … and our prime contractor for the MTO kitting program.”

Although the Air Force Medical Readiness Agency normally builds custom medical kits at a facility in San Antonio, Texas, to meet those needs, they occasionally exceed their internal production capacity and turned to the DLA Troop Support Medical team as an alternate source for medical kit production.

“[AFMRA is] using this as a proof of concept to establish an alternate means to do assembly builds that we can turn to when we have a surge requirement or we exceeded our capacity at San Antonio,“ AFMRA Logistics Management Specialist Mitchell Reading said.

“The impetus for building these specific kits was a planned assembly kit modernization that the USAF will do periodically to update the item configuration to incorporate new medical technology, align to current clinical practice guidelines and standards of care and to revise the configuration to support new and emerging threat environments and operational maneuvering concepts,” Reading said.

Regardless of the size, if the list of items is “mostly” medical in nature MTO can build the kit, Mathai said.

The program has grown nearly sixfold in almost as many years since being revamped in September 2016, peaking at $30 million in annual sales in 2018 while fulfilling a “significant need” for custom medical solutions Medical Integrated Supply Team Chief Abin Mathai said.

The team has worked with customers ranging from special operations forces with smaller yet unique individual needs to those like the Navy’s Bureau of Medicine and Surgery with requirements for more than 1,000 items with specific dimensions, weight restrictions and other criteria for use on ships and submarines.

“We take the list of requirements and specifics from the customer, coordinate with AbilityOne and the contractor to get costs, communicate the estimated costs with the customer, including items and kitting, and go from there to get them what they need,” Mathai said.

But Kimbrough said modern-day mold problems began anew in the early 1970s, when the oil crisis that caused high fuel prices and shortages led to construction of super energy-efficient buildings with little "breatheability," or natural airflow.That often created a climate conducive to mold because of improper sizing of air-conditioning systems, usually oversizing," said Kimbrough, who as a consultant to several air-quality companies has identified mold or mold spores in hundreds of buildings in North Central Florida.

"An oversize system causes the building to cool too quickly and then the air conditioning compressor stays off a lengthy time," he said. "During those intervals, moisture encroaches from outside to condense on surfaces inside the house and mold starts to form."

More dramatic mold growth can occur after a building has been flooded or experienced a leak in its plumbing system. Kimbrough said wallboard or any surface that stays wet for more than about one week is almost guaranteed to host serious mold - which can start growing in as little as 48 hours after exposure to moisture.

With some questioning the extent to which the two companies are actually independent of each other, CMC has been continually fine-tuning its ranking methodology.

Perhaps alluding to shaken trust in its own services over the past few months, CMC’s interim CEO, Carylyne Chan, explained the platform’s new “confidence score.” Chan told Cointelegraph that the idea behind the new confidence indicator is to not rely on volume as the sole data source, rather using a range of factors to ascertain data accuracy from each exchange:
CMC then uses the estimated volumes to detect “outliers,” where its machine learning model can spot which exchanges are reporting exponential volumes relative to its predictions.

Under the new algorithm, the top exchange is awarded a score of 1,000 points. Other exchanges are then given scores against the performance of the top exchange.

While this may be a big change from the previous system that reportedly relied heavily on web traffic figures, there hasn’t been a major reshuffle at the top of the rankings: Binance is still in first place. Chan said that the company’s decision to implement the changes was not influenced by its new owner:
While the confidence factor could be viewed as an improvement, it has not been met with universal acclaim. One Twitter user going by the name of Cosmonaut criticized CMC for placing BitMEX, a popular derivatives exchange, in 175th place. Deribit and Bybit, two other well-known derivatives platforms, were ranked closely at 179 and 177, respectively, at the time of reporting.

Puzzlingly, BitMEX was found to have a near-perfect web traffic score of 960 but a liquidity score of zero. In fact, 175th place appears to be a cliff-edge for exchanges that find themself at the precarious end of CMC’s rankings, as after this all exchanges have liquidity scores of zero. A CMC representative offered an explanation that the ranking only takes spot exchanges into account, with the derivatives platforms soon to be included.

But this does not account for another of Cosmonaut’s hawkish observations. The Twitter user pointed out that several exchanges in the top 50, such as CoinDXC and Huobi Russia, also have liquidity scores of zero.

It comes after the company, which is owned by Digital Currency Group, announced the closure of its operation in Singapore, where Ayyar is based.

Ayyar said the move was not related to Luno’s decision to exit Singapore, however, and that he quit to join another company in the crypto and Web3 space. Ayyar did not disclose which company he is joining next.

“I’ll be leaving Luno after 7 years at the company,” Ayyar said in a WhatsApp message. “Given the time I’d spent at Luno, just seemed like it was time for another challenge.”

A Luno spokesperson confirmed Ayyar’s decision Tuesday.

“Vijay will be leaving after seven years,” the spokesperson said. “His role is a global one and isn’t tied to anything related to our Singapore closure. He’s leaving to pursue a new opportunity in the industry.”

Ayyar held a number of roles at Luno over the years. He was most recently tasked with building out the firm’s business-facing services, pitching Luno accounts to funds, fintech companies, and businesses wanting to use crypto.

Before that, Ayyar led Luno’s partnership efforts globally and helped the exchange launch in over 40 markets across Southeast Asia, Africa, Europe, and the U.S.

In addition to his corporate responsibilities at Luno, Ayyar also serves as something of a crypto market guru, providing frequent commentary to the press on moves in markets.

His departure comes as Luno undergoes a major restructuring effort to contend with the lull in crypto markets. Luno laid off 35% of its workforce in January, joining a host of other crypto exchanges that have cut jobs.

The company also lost its co-founder and chief technology officer, Timothy Stranex, in December.

In March, Luno announced its CEO Marcus Swanepoel was stepping down and would be replaced with Chief Operating Officer James Lanigan.

The company hired Canaccord Genuity, the investment bank, to court outside investors for the first time since it was taken over by DCG in 2020.

DCG, Luno’s parent company, has been grappling with the ongoing fallout from last year’s plunge in token prices and collapses of numerous crypto companies and projects, including Terra, Three Arrows Capital, and, most notably, FTX.

DCG reported a loss of $1.1 billion in 2022, DCG-owned crypto news outlet CoinDesk reported in February, citing the firm’s annual investor report. The firm blamed the huge loss on the impact of collapsed crypto hedge fund Three Arrows Capital defaulting on a loan to digital currency lender Genesis, which DCG also owns. Genesis filed for bankruptcy in January owing creditors north of $3 billion.
