First-and-10 Stop whining and start fining

1. I dont want to get on a soapbox, but Lets stop dancing around the gaping sinkhole weve avoided all these years, suck it up and talk harsh reality. If you dont want schools fining players for poor behavior, you better be ready to stomach more off-field ills of the game  because its only getting worse with no deterrent.MORE: | | Im not going to give up on a guy because he made a mistake, Alabama coach Nick Saban Lewis Brinson Jersey  said earlier this summer. Its just not that simple. It never has been, and thats the critical point every player not only understands, but feeds on.Its not that simple for coaches to suspend or dismi s or bench players with behavior problems, because it impacts their ability to win, which impacts their ability to keep a job. Like it or not, thats basic cause and effect.Meanwhile, over the last five years, there have been 918 reported arrests in FBS . More disturbing: 52 percent of Power 5 teams have had at least 10 player arrests in the last five years, and the last four college football national champions (Ohio State, FSU, Alabama, Auburn) are among the top 26 teams in the sports with the most arrests over that span.Clearly, theres a correlation with bad eggs and good teams. So Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer decided he wanted to fine players for everything from a dirty dorm room to mi sing cla s, if for no other reason, because the concepts of accountability and responsibility and structure might just lead to doing the right thing on and off the field. Pollyanna, I know. Then Twitter got wind of it and the mean coach who was taking money from the innocent players had to watch his athletic director kneecap him by declaring all fines null and void. The players arent employees, you know.Oh really? What Kyle Barraclough Jersey  exactly do you call someone who cant qualify under freshman eligibility standards for typical students, but because of his unique ability to play a sport, receives a paid scholarship and a cost of attendance stipend (many also receive Pell Grant money) to attend a university? Is that some magnanimous gift from institutions of higher learning? No, its a tradeoff: you play football and help us make millions in television dollars, we give you a scholarship and allow you to go to school and play college football despite academic shortcomings  ANDtrain you for the NFL, which has never drafted a player who hasnt played at any level of college football. We can debate the thought proce s of how much players should be paid, but until the courts figure out a number (more on that later), its you need us as badly as we need you.Yes, its disgusting  but its our disgusting. Now look how absolutely shallow that players arent employees narrative looks. Now look how absolutely shortsighted the idea of preventing coaches fining players for behavior problems looks. There will absolutely be coaches who overstep and fine as a way of holding power over players. The world is full of self-absorbed jerks. Most coaches, though, arent going to randomly take money from players because its in the best interest  Blank Jersey of all involved that everything run smoothly. And understand this: maybe, just maybe, these fines  which arent really fines because the money is available at the end of the semester  actually help players realize the value of making smart decisions off the field.Imagine that, doing the right thing instead of doing the very least to get through three years of school uninjured with the ability to leave early, hoping to get invited to the NFL Combine, hoping to get drafted and hoping to become one of the le s than 5 percent of college players who actually make it in the NFL.For the league average of four piddly years. But lets not worry about setting up young men to succeed beyond football, lets all whine about coaches who make millions fining players who make nothing. The biggest problem with guys these days is nothing is looked at from 30,000 feet, says Texas coach Charlie Strong. They cant see life down the road away from the game. They see whats right in front of their face, and nothing else. Thats not just dangerous, its reckle s.Instead of looking at the idea of fining players as another way of coaches controlling players who arent employees, maybe we can see the bigger picture. The one from 30,000 feet. The one where king antitrust attorney Jeffrey Ke sler eventually does  Sergio Romo Jersey what every other attorney has done in court vs. the NCAA and meticulously shreds the concept of amateurism, thus opening the door for players to collectively bargain for half of the billions in television money. When that day comes, when players truly are employees, watch how quickly those in higher academia change the rules. There wont be a need for fines; the mandate from university presidents and board of trustee members will be, in the words of Nick Saban, simple: zero tolerance. One mistake, and the days of getting paid to play  and getting a free education despite not qualifying under the same academic standards as typical freshmen, and getting the free training and coaching to be one of the 5 percent who advance to the NFL  will be over.Nothing could be more simple than that.2. Hiring, 101For the life of me, I cant figure out why any athletic director would look at the resumes of Tim Beckman and, say, Dan Hawkins, and decide, yeah, Ill take the P.E. Coach..3. To QB or not QBThe game has changed and the position has evolved and the quarterback has never been more important in college football. But at what cost?MORE: | | While college football spread offenses are increasingly run through the quarterback  with everything depending on his ability to run dual-threat offenses  the NFL continues to play crawl ball. This, of course, begs this question: are college quarterbacks really being prepared for the NFL  or their college teams?Of the 32 projected starters this season in the NFL, only four  Cam Newton, Colin Kaepernick, Alex Smith and Marcus Mariota  were dual-threat quarterbacks who ran spread offenses in college. Its absolutely a concern, says  Starlin Castro Jersey one AFC scout. Youve got a generation of kids who are running dual-threat systems since before high school and have never taken a snap under center. Theyve never turned their back to the defense on play action, and turned around and had to read (coverages) after everything has changed in a blink. In the last 10 years of the NFL Draft, there have been seven true dual-threat quarterbacks selected in the first round. The only starter is Newton, Mariota is projected to start and the other five are either backups (Johnny Manziel, Robert Griffin III), desperately hanging on (Tim Tebow) or out of the league (Vince Young, Jake Locker).Choose programs/systems wisely, young quarterbacks.4.
