Joe Dumars Court was being unveiled Thursday, part of “Joe Dumars Day” at the school.
“Joe is by far the most accomplished basketball player to ever come out of McNeese,” athletic director Heath Schroyer said. “However, Joe is more than just an athlete. He’s a leader, a pioneer, and has accomplished so much in his professional and personal life.”
Dumars scored all of his college points before the 3-point line was established. He was the 18th pick in the 1985 NBA draft, going to the Detroit Pistons. Dumars spent his entire NBA playing career with the Pistons, becoming an All-Star six times and winning two titles.
He went into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006, and is now the executive vice president and head of basketball operations for the NBA.
“The naming of our court will allow future generations to know and understand the positive example Joe made to so many,” Schroyer said.
Blackhawk Christian School is honoring the legacy of late boys basketball coach Marc Davidson by dedicating its basketball floor to him ahead of the season opener November 29 against North Side.
Marc Davidson Court now adorns the gym floor at Blackhawk Christian. Along with it, a quote from Colossians 3:23: "Work heartily, as for the Lord."
Davidson's widow, Lisa, their children, and Marc's father, Don, were on hand for an emotional ceremony before tipoff of the varsity game between the Braves and the Legends. Don spoke at center court before leading the entire gymnasium in prayer, likened to what Marc--who died May 9 from cancer at age 49--did at the end of each game in what would be his final season as Blackhawk Christian head coach. A pre-recorded audio clip from Marc's brother was also played over the public address system.
North Side players, coaches and administrators presented the Blackhawk Christian team with bracelets commemorating the court dedication and ensuing game. The Braves would win 71-62. Marc's son, Jimmy, scoring the first points on the newly-minted Marc Davidson Court.
