Athletic board moves to slow down Nike’s record-breaking Vaporfly running shoe

A study on the impact of the controversial carbon-soled sneaker due out this week will “tighten regulations governing shoe technology,” Reuters reported, citing two sources with knowledge of the situation.
The $250 super shoe was on the feet of Kenyan runner Eliud Kipchoge when he became the first human to run a marathon in under two hours last year in Europe. A day later, Brigid Kosgei in Chicago broke the women’s marathon record, also wearing Vaporfly sneakers.The shoes’ weight and propulsion has been likened to “technological doping” by British professor Yannis Pitsiladis who warns that competitive running will become a competition between shoe manufacturers trying to match Nike’s technology rather than the athletes themselves.
Nike told Reuters they would respect the World Athletics decision, but feel that their efficiently designed shoe plays by the rules.We do not create any running shoes that return more energy than the runner expends,” the company said.
The World Athletics findings will not affect the consumer market for the Vaporfly, which has a recommended lifespan of roughly eight marathons. The governing body’s rulings could affect the certification of world records.
